課程概述 |
This course is general physics with an emphasis of the applications of physics in biology and medicine. The following topics will be selectively covered. |
課程目標 |
1. Mechanics
Review of Newtonian mechanics: F=ma, spring, momentum, angular momentum, energy, conservation, Principle of least action, Noether's theorem, diffusion, Brownian motion, membrane transport, and ultrasound.
2. Special and General Theory of Relativity
Length contraction, time-dilation, E=mc2 , anti-matter and positron emission tomography (PET)
Equivalence principle. Space-time curvature.
3. Electricity and Magnetism
Classical electricity and mechanism. Defibrillator. Photodynamic therapy. Laser applications in biology and medicine.
4. Optics and Microscopy
Reflection, refraction, scattering, diffraction, Huygens-Fresnel Principle, total international reflection. Fiber optics. Structure of the eye. Bright field microscopy: applications to histology (hematoxylin and eosin/H&E imaging). Fluorescence microsopy: labelling of cellular organelles, antibody labeling, green fluorescent proteins. High throughput tissue cytometry and precision medicine.
5. Quantum mechanics
Wave-particle duality, Schrödinger equation, atomic structure. Molecular spectroscopy (absorption, emission, Raman) and applications. Spin, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
